The room the code lives in

Every program is written twice. Once by the person who typed it, once by the room they typed it in — the desk, the light, the argument still going on in the next room.

You can read the first version. The second only shows up years later, when you can't remember why you did it that way and it turns out the reason had nothing to do with the code.
